Solutions for inspecting unpiggable pipelines

11 May 2020

It’s well documented that in-line inspection tools, or “pigs” are the most efficient method for inspecting and assessing pipelines used across a wide range of applications and industries.

It’s also true that there are a number of potential impediments which can prevent the inspection of a pipeline using conventional inspection pigs, such as:

  • Pipe diameter changes
  • Short radius bends (often 1D)
  • Pig launcher/receiver size restrictions
  • Insufficient operating pressure to push the inspection tool

When this is the case, the pipeline is termed “unpiggable” and it’s often necessary to use alternative, less effective and more time-consuming methods of inspection.

With its patented single-bodied construction, the Merlin smartpig is able to overcome all of these obstacles, which could hinder other multi-carriage designs.

The Merlin inspection tool utilises ultrasound to detect, locate and quantify pipe anomalies and flaws, including external/internal metal loss, dents, gouges, diameter/radius changes, pitting and internal fouling.  Its neutrally buoyant design allows the tool to travel with flow, in both horizontal and vertical applications up to a pipe diameter of 12-inches.  The system obtains up to 30,000 wall thickness and internal radius measurements per metre length of piping, confirming it as a complete solution for unpiggable pipeline applications.
