KTP – Revolutionising Inspection Through Machine Learning

08 August 2024

Having been so impressed by the results of our first Knowledge Transfer Partnership project with the University of Strathclyde in January 2023, we have recently embarked on our second KTP.  This project aims to use machine learning to improve wall thickness measurements and accelerate inspection speed and in so doing revolutionise the Cokebusters piping inspection process, providing a superior service to our energy sector clients.

This KTP has several key stakeholders – the University of Strathclyde, the West of Scotland KTP Centre, the Welsh Government and Innovate UK – who have contributed towards the project’s funding and provide ongoing knowledge and guidance.  We greatly appreciate the support each of these organisations provides to the project.

Cokebusters KTP associate researching machine learning for inspection services

Our new KTP Associate, Hongyu You, will be working to integrate machine learning into Cokebusters existing software to improve the effectiveness of our Ultrasound signal interpretation. Hongyu finished his PhD study in November 2023. During his PhD study, he was involved in two acoustic projects. The first is short-range acoustic localisation for Human-Computer Interaction, and the second is in-progress acoustic monitoring of laser welding. Hongyu proposed and developed an acoustic positioning technology, the Location Template-based Positioning Model (LTPM), by associating the acoustic multipath effect with pattern matching. Currently, Hongyu’s research interests lie in acoustic signal processing, machine learning and acoustic applications within Non-Destructive testing applications, he hopes to contribute to developing next-generation inspection PIG.

We don’t stand still at Cokebusters.  Our teams are constantly pushing to break new ground and improve our technology in order to deliver the best possible services to our valued clients.  The direction of our research and development investment has always been client-led and we are pleased to receive exciting new enquiries from a diverse array of companies in new geographical regions with new challenges for us to answer.  This strive for innovation is an intrinsic part of our company ethos and keeps us at the cutting edge in our specialist area of expertise.
