How In-House CNC Machining Has Accelerated Innovation at Cokebusters
24 July 2025
Back in 2019, Cokebusters announced the installation of a state-of-the-art 4-axis CNC machine at our UK Technology Centre – an investment supported in part by SMARTCymru and aimed at advancing the development of our intelligent tube and pipeline inspection systems.
Six years on, the impact of this decision continues to resonate across our operations.
From Rapid Prototyping to Daily Reliability
Initially acquired to support rapid prototyping for R&D, the CNC machine has evolved into an indispensable part of our Technology Centre. Today it plays a central role in the manufacture of critical components including:
-
Smart pig bodies and end caps
-
Custom moulds for scraper pigs
-
Bespoke fittings and workshop tooling
These parts are now manufactured in-house with precision and consistency by our Design and Manufacturing Technician Tom Code, helping to support everything from new product development to everyday maintenance of existing assets.
Reducing Delays, Cutting Costs
Previously, the outsourcing of specialist parts for repair or manufacture meant longer lead times, higher costs and less flexibility. Repairs and customisations can now be turned around quickly, minimising downtime and keeping development and production on track.
This agility has been especially valuable when responding to workshop issues or urgent client demands for our mechanical cleaning and inspection services, giving our teams the flexibility to adapt without compromising quality or timelines.
Empowering Our People
A core goal of the original investment was not only to improve output, but also to enhance internal capability. Since commissioning, more members of the team have received training on the CNC machine, developing valuable skills in precision engineering and component design. This expertise supports innovation from the ground up.
Supporting Our Sustainability Goals
Bringing machining in-house also aligns with our ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental impact. With fewer outsourced deliveries and streamlined production processes, we’ve significantly reduced our carbon footprint in this area of operations.
Looking Ahead
The CNC machining centre has proven to be much more than a prototyping tool – it’s a long-term enabler of innovation, quality control and operational efficiency. As Cokebusters continues to invest in the development of smarter, more capable inspection technologies, our ability to design, test and deliver precision components in-house gives us a real competitive edge.
