The Role Of The Master Welder At Cokebusters

05 June 2025

Manufacturing has always been at the heart of what we do at Cokebusters. By internalising the manufacture of our equipment, supply chain dependency is reduced, leading to more flexibility and direct governance over our production process.  Welding is a key part of this process.

In order to meet every possible demand on site, the Cokebusters specialist Double Pumping Units arrive with absolutely every piece of equipment required for the job.  They have been specifically designed to maximise storage and include a number of pressure vessels, pig launchers and heavy duty lifting equipment, all of which requires high expertise in welding.  The engine mounting deck is built to our own specification to ensure a solid foundation for engine mountings.

Our Master Welder, Simon Taylor, works in machine and equipment fabrication in our purpose-built manufacturing workshop.  Simon has been with Cokebusters since 2010 and is a coded welder approved by TWI (The Welding Institute).  Cokebusters is a member and has long been affiliated with the TWI where Simon has undergone specialist training, specifically in working with stainless steel.  Recently Simon has been working alongside his trainee, Adam, who is rapidly gaining experience and knowledge of his craft.

For the past 20 years since the introduction of the new series “21” (21st Century) Double Pumping Units, we have used stainless steel extensively in the design of our specialist machinery.  Using stainless steel in double pumping units offers a combination of strength, reliability and corrosion resistance, making it ideal for high-demand, long-life industrial applications.  While it may have a higher initial cost than other materials, we have always found the long-term performance and reduced maintenance make it more cost-effective overall.  With very little maintenance required to keep the structure of our DPUs in good order, they can be out in the field for longer spells of time.

Welding stainless steel demands more skill, specific knowledge, care, cleanliness and control than welding mild or carbon steel.  In high-spec environments such as ours, our Master Welder is highly valued for his ability to deliver strong, corrosion-resistant welds without compromising the material.

Having launched CB20 – the first of our new low-emission Double Pumping Units – last year, the workshop team at our Technology Centre in Chester is currently working to bring our second hydraulic machine, CB21, to completion under the management of New Build Project Manager Lukasz Kremski.

Manufacturing matters at Cokebusters.  We take a great deal of pride in the quality and durability of the machinery we produce to ensure it reliably supports our operators on site, enabling Cokebusters to deliver the best possible service to its clients in the more time-efficient and effective manner.
