In-line Inspection
Pipelines

Pipeline inspection and integrity management rely on accurate knowledge of internal condition and geometry. However, many pipeline systems present significant challenges to conventional in-line inspection techniques.

Short pipeline lengths, small diameters, tight bend radii, diameter or schedule changes and restricted access points often render pipelines unpiggable by traditional inspection tools. In other cases, the economics of deploying large multi-bodied inspection spreads are not justified, leaving operators without credible inspection data.

“Unpiggable pipelines” commonly include features such as:

  • Diameter or schedule changes
  • Short or tight radius bends
  • T-pieces, branches or complex tie-ins
  • Short lengths
  • Limited or no breaks to install conventional launch and receive systems
  • Poor economics

Without reliable internal pipeline inspection data, operators face uncertainty around pipeline geometry, bore restrictions, fouling and readiness for further cleaning or integrity assessment. This lack of visibility creates operational inefficiency and contributes to unquantifiable residual risk.

Cokebusters delivers pipeline inspection services using its proven intelligent pig technology, specifically developed to operate in pipelines traditionally considered unpiggable.

Based on over 20 years of continuous development, Cokebusters’ patented single-module intelligent pig is a compact, battery-powered and bi-directional inspection tool. Its single-bodied design integrates transducers, control electronics, power supply and alignment appendages within one assembly, enabling it to navigate complex pipeline geometries that defeat conventional inspection tools.

The intelligent pig accurately assesses internal geometry and condition, identifying bore restrictions, deformation and internal anomalies across pipelines ranging from 2.5” to 12” internal diameter. This provides operators with clear, actionable insight into pipeline condition and suitability for subsequent cleaning, inspection or integrity activities.

Designed for
Unpiggable Pipelines

The compact nature of the intelligent pig allows deployment through existing access points and in-line pig valves, commonly found on pipelines used for cleaning or batch separation. This enables intelligent pig pipeline inspection to be performed with minimal or no modification to the pipeline infrastructure.

Recent advancements also include the integration of an odometer system within the single-bodied assembly. This enhancement provides continuous axial position logging as the tool travels through the pipeline, allowing every ultrasonic measurement to be accurately correlated to a
specific physical location on the asset.

This capability is critical for effective defect detection, enabling rapid and precise localisation of anomalies during follow-up inspection or maintenance activities.

Inspection Capability

Cokebusters’ pipeline integrity inspection services can accurately identify and quantify a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Internal wall loss
  • External wall loss
  • Fretting damage
  • Creep deformation
  • Internal fouling such as petroleum coke or scale
  • Areas of pitting corrosion
  • Historic repairs
  • Schedule changes
  • Dents and geometric anomalies

Using pulse-echo ultrasonic inspection, the intelligent pig gathers high-density internal radius and wall thickness measurements. Data can be presented numerically, graphically and as C-scan visualisations, providing significantly greater insight than conventional handheld UT techniques.
Inspection results support fitness-for-service and remaining life assessments in accordance with API 579 / ASME FFS-1 standards.

The Cokebusters Approach

Pipeline inspection is often delivered as part of an integrated mechanical cleaning and inspection programme.

By combining mechanical cleaning with in-line inspection, Cokebusters enables pipelines to be cleaned, inspected and verified within a single coordinated operation. Inspection data can be used to confirm internal bore condition, validate cleaning effectiveness and support decision-making around future inspection or integrity activities.

Operations are delivered by integrated teams of mechanical cleaning operators and inspection technicians working together on site. This collaborative approach ensures that inspection data is immediately interpreted and applied, maximising efficiency and reducing overall project duration.

Precision Axial Measurement

At the heart of the odometer capability is a lightweight aluminium assembly that replaces the rear brush section of the smart pig with a high-precision inline inspection odometer.

The system incorporates:

  • Multiple spring-loaded arms with dedicated sensors and data processors
  • Rubber-tread wheels to prevent slippage and avoid metal-on-metal contact
  • Triple cross-verification logic to ensure positional accuracy

As the smart pig travels through the pipeline, wheel rotations are continuously calibrated and logged, generating a reliable and traceable distance profile that correlates directly with every ultrasonic wall thickness reading. This creates a robust odometer system for pipeline inspection.

Transforming Inspection Data Into Insight

The addition of odometer functionality transforms ultrasonic inspection into a fully position-referenced integrity map.

This inspection odometer solution gives operators the clarity needed to plan interventions with confidence. Precise axial location enables rapid defect pinpointing, targeted excavation or maintenance and meaningful trend analysis over time.

Key outcomes include:

  • Accurate identification of anomaly locations
  • Enhanced support for fitness-for-service and remaining life assessments
  • Integration into digital integrity databases and risk-based inspection programmes
  • Repeatable, position-referenced datasets for long-term integrity management

Field-Proven Performance

The odometer-equipped smart pig has been deployed successfully in real-world pipeline inspections, including complex, multi-phase carbon steel systems without conventional launcher or receiver infrastructure.

Despite challenging bends, tees and varying elevations, the pipeline odometer system delivered a continuous axial log and complete ultrasonic dataset, supporting detailed condition mapping in environments that standard inspection tools cannot reach.
