Piping Inspection

The Challenge

The challenge of (internally) inspecting so called unpiggable piping/pipelines is familiar to many operators.

The following parameters can contribute to this situation:

  • Diameter too small
  • Diametric changes
  • Bend radius too tight
  • Other geometric constraints such as box-headers/mule ears, pipe tees, square angles etc.
  • Limited access/egress
  • Pipeline length too short
  • Not economically viable

In the absence of credible inspection and thus integrity insight, the owner/operator is left in a situation of unquantifiable residual risk.

The Solution

In order to deal with awkward geometrical features Cokebusters patented the single module smart pig.

As an untethered, bi-directional, battery powered intelligent pig this overcomes geometric challenges.  This industry-leading invention, all contained in a single body, has led to further generations of patented technology following a development path of 20 years.  This sophisticated 3rd generation inspection tool can rapidly scan internal and external pipe surfaces across a diameter range of 2.5”-12” ID.

Our bespoke 4th Generation device can operate down to 1.5” ID and is believed to be the smallest intelligent pig worldwide.

The Cokebusters‘ intelligent pig is suited not only to the complex serpentine coil networks found within heaters and steam generators, but also to process piping systems and pipelines.

Ultrasonic in nature, the intelligent pig is propelled by liquid flow, provided by Cokebusters’ pumping units or within the control of the facility product flow.

Using our bespoke Roxtail™ software, results are provided numerically, graphically and by 3D user interface.

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI)

One of the most prolific and challenging forms of corrosion on piping systems is that associated with corrosion under insulation.  A combination of heat, moisture, coatings, contaminants etc. can lead to accelerated corrosion, which is of course difficult to detect.

The conventional method is a comprehensive de-lagging programme prior to inspection, remediation and reinstatement.

The Cokebusters’ intelligent pig is able to quickly locate and resolve external corrosion.  It is able to do this in the presence of insulation and shielding, thus removing the need for extensive access works.
